Dr Gertjan Vlieghe to join MPC
On 1 September he will replace David Miles, who has enjoyed an extended term since joining from 2009. Last week Miles warned that it would be a “bad mistake” if the bank waited too long to raise rates.
Vlieghe spent seven years as economic assistant and speech writer for ex-Governor Lord King, while he has also been the director of Deutsche Bank. He is currently a partner and economist at Brevan Howard Asset Management.
Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England, said: “I am delighted to welcome Gertjan Vlieghe as the new external member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee.
“Jan’s insight, judgement and perspective will be invaluable to the committee in the coming years, and I very much look forward to working with him.
“I also want to express my gratitude to David Miles who has served the MPC with dedication and distinction since joining in 2009. On behalf of the whole of the Bank I want to wish him well for the future.”
Vlieghe beat 26 applicants to the role, including six women, which was advertised for a month running from May 29.
