Homeowners and conveyancers should not dismiss environmental changes

Conveyancers and homeowners should not dismiss environmental changes and weather warnings as the costs and effects can be great says Geoff Offen, managing director at Future Climate Info.

This comes as today marks the 30th anniversary of The Great Storm of 1987 which caused £2bn in damage.

Offen said: “Unfortunately, even after all this time, we’re all still too dismissive of the power and destruction weather can inflict upon our homes each year.

“Around one in six homes are at risk of flooding from a storm or heavy rain in the UK today - homebuyers and owners need to be better informed and prepared for flooding with an increased sense of urgency.

“As once-a-century storms become annual events all over the world, conveyancers and legal professionals need to better prepare clients to understand and protect their properties against flood damage and other environmental risks.

“There is no longer a place for professionals willing to dismiss the risks as what happened 30 years ago.”
