Mortgages dominate housing costs for 30 to 49 year olds

Mortgage costs represent the largest housing expenditure for households aged 30 to 49, figures from the Office for National Statistics show.

This accounts for 36% of all housing expenditure alongside net rent, secondary dwelling, charges, moving house, maintenance/repair of dwelling, alterations and improvements to dwelling, and household insurances.

Contrastingly households with somebody under the age of 30 who is legally responsible see most of their household spending (59%) go on net rent.

The figures were from the final quarter of 2018.
