Intermediaries will now have direct access to underwriters in order to discuss individual cases.

Tim Hughes, head of intermediary markets at Nationwide, said: “We have taken the decision to place specialist underwriters in our mortgage centres as a direct result of feedback from intermediaries. They want to know that if they have a difficult case that they can speak to someone about it to find out whether Nationwide will underwrite it.

“Not every application is straightforward and sometimes intermediaries need a point of contact to discuss aspects of their client’s application. This is one of a series of developments we will be making to our intermediary proposition over the next few months to prove our commitment to the marketplace.”

The underwriters will be based in every mortgage processing centre. They have been recruited both internally and externally.
