Pure Panel Management announces passing of David Gillam

Mortgage Introducer

October 28, 2021

Paul Panel Management has sadly announced the passing of the company’s founder David Gillam (pictured).

Gillam, an extremely well-known and respected figure in the industry, had previously held roles with GAVS and Xit2 before setting up Pure Panel Management.

Over the past few years he had taken a step back from the day-to-day running of the business, especially during the pandemic.

Newly appointed managing director James Gillam said: “It’s a very sad time for the team here at Pure, as everyone knows David was not only a big bloke, but a big personality and he will be hugely missed by everyone here not only as a boss but a great friend.

“The support and messages we have had from clients who have become good friends over the years has been immense and greatly appreciated.”

Tributes have poured in following the news.

John Archbold, head of property risk at Aldermore, posted on LinkedIn: ” [It’s] A very sad day for the residential valuation community with the news that the inimitable David Gillam passed away suddenly last Tuesday.

“David was a giant of the residential valuation world whether from his days with GAVS (now eSurv), Xit2 or more latterly his own company Pure Panel Management.

“He was larger than life in every way and was the undisputed king of the corporate entertainment event where he would effortlessly hold court with lenders, brokers, solicitors etc, often finishing the evening with his trademark rendition of “Running Bear”.

“John Bagshaw said to me today that if he ever asks someone “Do you know David Gillam?” and they hesitantly say “ David Gillam…???” John says “No, you don’t know him” Once you met David you didn’t forget him.

“David was one of a kind and so many of us have a David Gillam story we could easily fill a book with his antics. I had the privilege of spending two years under his “tutelage” as a trainee surveyor with Mann & Co, many years ago. Looking back I’m not sure how much I learnt much about surveying but we had a lot of laughs and I learnt a lot about lunching… but on a serious note, he was a big influence on my career, as I know he was for lots of people.

“My condolences go out to his boys James and Alistair who worked with him at Pure PM.

“Rest in Peace big man… I honestly don’t think we’ll ever see your likes again in our industry.”

Richard Tugwell, director of mortgage distribution at Vida Homeloans, added:  “So sad. I have had many a day/night/dinner /event with David. A generous man, great company and always entertaining.

“A meeting with David was always one to look forward to. My thoughts are with his family. He will be missed.”

Brian Pitt, chief executive officer at Rockstead and Yabber Global, also added to the tributes: “Everyone that knew the great man can list funny stories and as I recall the times I was in his company, it is with a huge smile.

“Proud to have known you Dave, RIP big fellah.”

Following the announcement and in accordance with his wishes a proposal has been put forward which will take Pure forward into 2022 and beyond.

A new board of directors has been put in place and, as well as James Gillam, the board will comprise Helen Scorer, Lynne Wilkinson and Alistair Gillam.

In addition, Mai Mak, a chartered accountant of over 30 year’s standing has been appointed as chief financial officer. Mai has been closely associated with Pure since inception.

The new structure reflects how the business had been running for the past 18 months.
