Top job for former Housing Minister Alok Sharma

Former Housing Minister Alok Sharma has been named as Secretary of State for International Development in Boris Johnson's new cabinet.

Sharma takes up the role as part of Johnson's "cabinet for modern Britain"

Former housing contemporaries who have been placed in top jobs include Dominic Raab, a former Housing Minister, and Sajid Javid a former Housing Secretary.

Speaking of the appointment independent mortgage broker Bryan Hay said: "Alok Sharma is a very capable individual.

"His rise over the years has clearly been notable. However I think the measure of the minister was the way he was moved moved when he made his statement to the House of Commons in July 2017 following the Grenfell Tower fire.

"It's clear he isn't just some bureaucrats but is actually a someone who cares. It's refreshing to see that today."

Sharma has been Member of Parliament for Reading West since 2010.

He was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office by Theresa May in 2016.

In 2017 he was moved to become Housing and Planning minister in the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Following that he became Minister of State for Employment.
